Massachusetts LTC Renewal: Steps, Fees and Timing

To renew a Massachusetts resident LTC, follow the licensing instructions for the police department in your home city or town. You can submit an application online, but still need to complete the department’s payment and document requirements. Start before the expiration date printed on your license.

This guide covers resident renewals. If you live outside Massachusetts, use our nonresident LTC application and renewal guide; the issuing authority and expiration rules are different. This is general application information, not a determination of your individual license status.

When should you renew your Massachusetts LTC?

Check the date on the card instead of estimating from the year you took your class. Under §131(e), a resident LTC generally expires on a birthday between five and six years after issuance; a February 29 birthday uses March 1. Suspension or revocation can end validity earlier.

As a planning habit, set a reminder about three months before expiration. That gives you time to find the current local instructions, gather documents and resolve questions. It is not a promise that every department accepts applications that early or finishes within that period. Ask your department when it wants your renewal submitted.

Use your city or town, not a county-wide process. A classmate in another South Shore town may have a different appointment or payment procedure. If you moved, confirm which department now handles your application and address record.

Massachusetts LTC renewal checklist

Begin with Mass.gov’s official application page and your local police department’s renewal instructions. Keep these items together:

  1. Your current license and identification. Check your license number, expiration date and address before entering them.
  2. A completed renewal application. Use the current form or the official MIRCS Unified Gun Portal linked by Mass.gov.
  3. The renewal affidavit. Complete the lost-or-stolen-firearms section, including the appropriate response if none were lost or stolen.
  4. Payment and any locally requested documents. Confirm the amount, payment method and how the department receives supporting materials.
  5. A saved application copy and receipt. Keep the submission confirmation, payment record and licensing authority’s receipt together.

The current resident application includes the renewal affidavit. It is not a page to skip merely because you have nothing to report: it provides separate choices for no loss or theft and for firearms reported lost or stolen. Read the form carefully, sign where required and supply accurate information.

Can you renew an LTC online?

Yes. The state provides online applications through MIRCS. Online submission does not necessarily finish every local step. For example, Canton’s renewal instructions say payment must still be submitted to its police department. Abington asks online applicants to supply a printed application and any required fee. Follow your own department’s instructions rather than copying either example.

Before closing your browser, save the confirmation and note your next action. A calendar appointment and a completed application are different milestones; ask the department what remains outstanding if you are unsure.

How much does an LTC renewal cost?

The standard resident LTC fee is $100. §121F(o)–(p) provides a $25 rate for active and retired law-enforcement officials and a renewal-fee exemption for people over age 70 and officers applying through their employing agency. Confirm any exception and accepted payment method with your licensing department.

The government renewal fee is separate from private training tuition. Do not pay for a new class solely because your card is approaching expiration; first establish whether any training applies to your circumstances.

Do you need another firearms safety course to renew?

Do not assume every renewal requires repeating the full basic course. Training changes involve specific application, issuance and course dates. Have those dates and your previous certificate available when you ask your licensing authority.

EOPSS Guidance #5, question 2, addresses licenses issued after August 1, 2024 but before October 2, 2024. It says a new BFS course and live fire are not required for that group unless the application was submitted after August 1; in that case, it specifies a short State Police supplemental online course, without live fire. That answer should not be stretched into a rule for every license holder.

If your dates fall outside that example, ask which current instruction applies before booking training. Our firearms safety certificate guide explains how to identify your course documentation and check official training resources.

What happens if your Massachusetts LTC expires?

§121F(s) distinguishes several resident-license situations: a renewal filed before expiration remains valid pending approval or denial; a separate provision covers up to 90 days after the stated expiration, except revoked or suspended licenses; and active-duty military provisions have their own conditions.

Do not treat this as an unlimited extension or assume filing late creates the same pending-renewal protection as filing before expiration. If your card has expired, contact your licensing authority promptly to establish your status and next steps. Individual questions about lawful possession or carrying may require legal advice.

These resident provisions do not extend a temporary nonresident LTC. The state specifies no grace period for that license. See the nonresident renewal section.

Common LTC renewal questions

How do I check my renewal status?

Mass.gov directs applicants to the online account or their licensing authority. When following up, have your submission date and confirmation available. Ask whether the application is complete and whether anything remains due. Our Massachusetts LTC timeline guide explains processing stages and why appointment timing matters.

Should I submit another application if I have not heard back?

Contact the department first and ask it to locate the existing submission. Keep a brief record of your follow-up and the instructions you receive, rather than creating a second application without direction.

Does an address change wait until renewal?

No. §131(g) requires an address change to be reported through the state’s electronic system within 30 days. Renewal is not a substitute for that separate obligation.
